COLLECTIONS OF PAPYRI

COLLECTION
NAME
ABBREV.
LOCATION / DESCRIPTION

Amherst Papyri

P.Amh.

This is a collection of an Englishman: the Right Hon. Lord Amherst of Hackney. It includes The Ascension of Isaiah and other biblical and early church fragments, as well as other classical documents from the Ptolemaic, Roman, and Byzantine eras. The collection was edited by Grenfell and Hunt in 1900-1901.

Bad. Papyri

P.Bad.

Bodmer Papyri

P.Bod.

This collection of approximately fifty manuscripts was purchased by Martin Bodmer of Switzerland in 1955-56. The collection is located in the Bodmer Library in Cologny (near Geneva). The exception is Pap. VIII (including 1 & 2 Peter), which was given as a gift to Pope Paul VI in 1969; it is in the Vatican Library. These Greek and Coptic documents were discovered in Egypt, probably at Pabau, near a Pachomian monastery. They are from both codices and scrolls; most are papyri, but three are on parchment (Pap. XVI, XIX, and XXII). In terms of content, they include classical texts (e.g., Iliad, Odyssey, and Thucydides), biblical documents (both OT and NT), and writings of the early churches (see also: Pietersma 1992:766-67).

Chester Beatty Papyri

P. Chester Beatty

This collection of eleven codices was acquired by Sir Alfred Chester Beatty, an American (who became a naturalized British citizen in 1933), in 1930-31 and 1935. It is housed near Dublin, Ireland, in the Chester Beatty Library and Gallery of Oriental Art. The collection was edited by Frederic G. Kenyon. The manuscripts date from the 2nd to the 4th centuries. Parts of these codices were later acquired by several other U.S. and European libraries and universities (see also Pietersma, 1992:901-3). The Chester Beatty Library website is located at:
www.cbl.ie

Colt Papyri

P.Colt

Pierpont Morgan Library (New York). Their website is located at:
www.morganlibrary.org

Egerton Papyrus 2

P.Eg.

British Museum, London, England. The first four fragments from an early papyrus codex were discovered in 1934 among miscellaneous scraps purchased from an antiquities dealer. Their provenance is unknown, but may be Oxyrhynchus, Egypt. A fifth fragment has been discovered among the Cologne Papyri (inv. 608, nr. 255). These are part of an unknown gospel (see Gamble 1992). There is a website dedicated to this manuscript, edited by Wieland Willker (University of Bremen, Germany), located at:
www-user.uni-bremen.de/~wie/Egerton/Egerton_home.html

Michigan Papyri

P.Mich.

This collection of over 10,000 papyrus fragments (with 7,000 separate inventory numbers) is housed at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The website for the University of Michigan Papyrus Collection is located at:
www.lib.umich.edu/pap

Oxyrhynchus Papyri

P.Oxy.

These papyri framents were discovered in and around Oxyrhynchus (modern Behnesa), Egypt, located about 125 miles south of Cairo. They were discovered by Bernard P. Grenfell and Arthur S. Hunt, beginning in 1897. The publication of these is still in progress. Papyri from this site are not in one location, but are owned by a variety of libraries, universities, and museums. The Website for the Oxyrhychus Papyri Project (POXY, Oxyrhychus Papyri Online!) is located at:
www.csad.ox.ac.uk/POxy/.

Princeton Papyri

P.Princ.

Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey. Their website is located at:
www.princeton.edu/papyrus/

Rylands Papyri

P.Ryl.

The John Rylands Library is associated with the University of Manchester (Manchester, England). Their collection of ancient Greek resources includes over seven hundred papyri, in addition to thirty-one ostraca and fifty-four codices. These dated from the third century BCE to the nineteenth century CE. The collection webpage is located at:
